Could There Be Something Worse For Your Health Than BPA?

BPA is a chemical found in reusable plastic containers, shampoos, and can liners

It has been shown to be a powerful endocrine disruptor, meaning it may disrupt your body’s natural ability to produce hormones.

However, BPA can also increase estrogen levels which could decrease your testosterone levels.

In fact, BPA has been shown to disrupt normal cholesterol production in your liver and mitochondria, which could reduce testosterone and sperm production.

However, there is a new member of the BPA family that could be even more dangerous to your body.

BPAF (bisphenol AF) is a fluorinated organic compound and is related to BPA.  BPA contains two methyl groups in it chemical makeup, where BPAF replaces those two methyl groups with trifluoromethyl groups.

Very similar to BPA, BPAF also acts as an endocrine disruptor, by acting on endocrine receptors and mimicking the effects of estrogen.

However, BPAF goes one step further, by blocking the production of estrogen, therefore increasing its harmful effects in your body.

BPAF is found in many plastics, electronic equipment, optical fibers, and other sources.

Now, a new study published in Toxicology Letters, shows that BPAF could disrupt normal testosterone production by directly affecting genes and protein found in your testes.

Let me explain…

Bisphenol-AF and Testosterone Production

The authors of this study wanted to see the effects of BPAF exposure in the testes and its related mechanism related to toxicity.

They exposed male rats to BPAF at 0, 2, 10, 50, and 200 mg/kg/day for a period of 14 days.

The mice that were exposed to higher BPAF levels (50 mg and 200 mg/kg/day) showed decreases in total cholesterol.

Also they showed with increasing BPAF exposure, there was also an increase in the concentration of BAPF found in the testes.
In relation to testosterone, they noted that higher dose of BPAF exposure resulted in a decrease in serum testosterone levels, plus an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

The mice exposed to BPAF also showed a decrease in genes and proteins that are necessary for cholesterol biosynthesis, transport, and steroid biosynthesis (testosterone production).

At a higher dose (200 mg/kg/day), the mice showed decreased levels of mRNA levels of Inhibin B, estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) and LH receptor.

From their research, the authors concluded that BPAF-induce inhibition of testosterone production primarily resulted in alterations of genes and proteins in the testosterone biosynthesis pathway.

This research is very new and other research is needed to verify their findings.  However, this does provide evidence to support the dangerous effects of BPAF and how that exposure may be detrimental to male reproductive health.

Dangerous Chemicals To Your Health

BPA and its relative BPAF have been shown to be endocrine disruptors that can create havoc in your body.

BPAF especially, has been shown to mimic estrogen, inhibit the production of cholesterol, stop the production of estrogen, and could even decrease your production of testosterone.

According to this study, BPAF could be a more dangerous chemical disruptor than BPA, which may lead to alterations in your hormone production.

However, by limiting your exposure to BPA and BPAF, exercising at the right times, and eating the right foods (to name a few) could potentially lead to natural increases in your testosterone levels.
