The Perfect Recipe For Better Brain Health?

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

Antioxidants, which are powerful nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, have been shown to have a powerful impact on your health.

Due to the hundreds of billions of chemical processes going on in your body, you could have a build-up of free radicals or reactive oxygen species.

These molecules, which are very unstable, travel through your body, potentially causing damage to healthy cells.

However, powerful antioxidants have the ability to bind to free radicals (reactive oxygen species), stabilize them, and then bring them to the surface in order to be destroyed by another potent substance, like Vitamin C.

As you get older, there may be an increase in these free radicals, which could cause impairments in brain function, most notably in cognition.

Research has shown that antioxidants could have a beneficial effect on cognition, but it has only been shown in animal models.

However, a new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, shows that a combination of different antioxidants, could prove effective at slowing age-related loss of cognition in older adults.

Let me explain…

Aging and Brain Function

As you age, you may notice a slow decline in different areas of your body.

You may notice a loss of strength, poor eyesight, or memory issues, which could all be attributed to the aging process.

Research has shown that certain nutrients (omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene, and Gingko biloba) could be beneficial to brain, eye, and overall health.

The authors of this study aimed to see if the combination of omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene, and Gingko biloba could be effective at slowing the rate of cognitive impairment and function in elderly adults.

They recruited 41 subjects who were 65 years of age or older.  Also, they recruited 622 adults, who did not take supplements, which acted as their control group.

They were given a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene, and Gingko biloba daily for three years.

They assessed cognitive function over the course of the three year experiment, plus they assessed the relationship of the APOE genotype and the effects of antioxidants as it relates to cognitive function.

The APOE genotype is a class of apolipoprotein that is found in your body.   The APOE 4 genotype has been shown to increase your risk in atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and a decrease in cognitive function.

From their work, they showed that the combination of antioxidants (omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene, and Gingko biloba) improved cognitive function over the course of three years in aging adults.

Also, they showed that the combination improved function in participants who were both non carriers and carriers of the APOE 4 genotype.

The research showed that there was a marked improvement in cognitive function especially in the APOE carriers.

They concluded that multiple antioxidants, when used in combination, protect against deficits found in other antioxidants and synergistically enhance their properties.  They explained that this relationship could explain how the different nutrients contribute to the improvements in cognitive function.

Although this research shows promise for improved cognitive function, it still needs to be verified by other research before this combination of treatment options could be considered valid.

However, it does further strengthen the relationship of omega-3 fatty acids, lycopene, and Gingko biloba as potent nutrients that could be beneficial to overall health and wellness.

Combination for Improve Brain Power

Aging could be associated with a decline in many different systems of your body.

From eye health to a decline in strength, aging has been associated with a slow decline in function – especially in some areas of your brain.

However, according to the results of this study, a combination of different antioxidants could result in improvements in cognitive function as you age.

Including tomato for lycopene, fish, krill, or a high-quality omega-3 supplement, and gingko biloba could improve your brain health as you age.
