3 GREEN Foods To Power Your Fat Loss

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Cerfified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

You may be gearing up this Sunday for green beer, Shepherd’s pie, corned beef and cabbage, or a nice tall glass of Guinness.

Sunday marks a very special day in Irish history and folklore, with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Now, like most holidays, people feel the need to celebrate – in this case – the heritage of being Irishmen (or women).

And there’s no better way to celebrate the gold ol’ Irish tradition like wearing, eating, and living in the color GREEN!

With that in mind, here are some GREEN foods that you should be incorporating this Sunday – and well – everyday really!

GREEN Breakfast

If you like Dr. Suess, then green eggs and ham may instantly pop in your head.

But there are plenty of other green things you can have for breakfast.

In fact, spinach is one that instantly pops into mind.

You can layer your eggs on top of it, mix it in with a green smoothie, or even make a green scramble out of this hearty and tasty leafy green.

Spinach is packed full of nutrition.  Besides it being low in calories, one cup of spinach may pack as much as 20 percent of your daily recommended intake of fiber.

And, it's full of cancer-fighting nutrients that have been shown to slow down cancer cell growth, plus, it has other potent antioxidants that may reduce inflammation levels in your body!

I think Popeye knew something we didn’t!

GREEN Lunch

Have you ever had a pizza, but instead of red sauce, it had pesto as the base?

Pesto – which is primarily made from basil leaves – is a great source of fat-fighting and health-boosting nutrients.

Besides being a staple of many dishes, basil has been shown to have DNA anti-bacterial fighting properties and other nutrients that have potent anti-inflammatory properties.

If basil is not your thing, you can always substitute kale for the basil for a great, health-boosting alternative.

GREEN Dinner

Of course, dinner is the right time to have your cabbage (or you can have it for lunch…or…breakfast too in some cases!).

Cabbage – which along with turnips, carrots, and potatoes -rounds out the traditional Irish meal!

Cabbage is full of nutrients that also promote health.

In fact, cabbage has been shown to be a potent fighter against cancer.

Cabbage exerts its helpful effects by possessing anti-inflammatory molecules, being rich in antioxidants, and being full of glucosinolates.

Glucosinolates are compounds that possess sulfur and nitrogen, and are commonly made from glucose and amino acids.

They are potent fighters against oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, both of which are potent risk factors (among others) for cancer development.

The BEST Green Vegetables

Of course, there are plenty of other green fruits and vegetables you can include on this list that possess health benefits.

In fact, avocados, celery, green peppers, and other leafy green vegetables contain plenty of health promoting fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are needed for optimal health.
