But – as the research states – there is very little that has been done regarding dietary habits that include fast food, junk food, and baked good consumption.
Until now that is!
Researchers were on the move, trying to determine if the consumption of junk food negatively impacted depression scores.
What did they find?
They found that people who ate junk food – like hot dogs, cupcakes, and sweets – were more than 50 percent more likely to have bad mood feelings.
And, the more junk food that they ate, the higher the depression risk.
These results were compared to people who seldom or never ate junk food.
They concluded:
“Fast-food and commercial baked goods consumption may have a detrimental effect on depression risk.”
Steps to Reduce Your Risk
The first step, is to reduce – or eliminate – your consumption of junk food, fast food, and commercially made baked good.
If you have a sweet tooth and you feel that you need to have something sweet in order to satisfy you, look to your favorite fruit!
Not only is fruit full of good, unprocessed sugar, they also contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are perfect for keeping your body healthy and fit.
Plus, they are low in calories, moderate in fiber (keeps you feeling full) and most of the time low in fat (except for avocados and coconut which have plenty of beneficial, fat-fighting fats!).
This may reduce your risk for developing depression, plus encourage healthy weight loss.
As previously mentioned, omega-3 fatty acids have been extensively studied and shown to promote benefits for both brain and overall mental health.
