Are You Using Nature’s Natural Sunscreen?
There is one six-letter word, when uttered, may elicit a number of different emotions: fear, sadness, depression, courage, and devastation.
That six-letter word: Cancer.
Although there are many forms of cancer and each one with their own survival and death rates, there seems to be one type that is growing among teens, children, and adults.
And that is skin cancer.
In fact, here are some very real and scary statistics:
• Over ONE MILLION cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year in the US
• Current estimates (2009) show that ONE in FIVE people will develop some form of skin cancer
• Basal cell and squamous cell cancer are the two most common forms, and when caught early enough, are easily treatable
• Since 1992, there has been a 3.1 percent INCREASE in cases of melanoma
• Melanoma is the most common form of cancer in young adults between the ages of 25 and 29 and in adolescent and young adults in the 15 to 29 category
• In 2009, it was estimated that there would be over 121,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed
• The WHO estimates that over 65,000 people die each year from sun-related diseases, most of them coming from melanoma
Skin cancer is a very real and very serious condition that – if left untreated – may be the difference between life and death.
Now, skin cancer is a growing area of concern not only in the US but around the world.
But, there may be a new breakthrough – a fat if you will – that may increase the protection of your skin against exposure to the sun.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Skin Cancer
According to research, skin cancer is a growing problem with more and more people being diagnosed each year.
And for most, exposure to ultraviolet light rays could be the main contributing factor to the development of skin cancer.
Why?
Studies show that sunlight exposure may weaken the skin’s immunity – called photoimmunosupression – which may increase the person’s risk for the development of skin cancer.
Of course, protecting your skin, not spending more than 10 minutes in direct sunlight, and use of sunscreen crèmes may be effective at boosting protection or your skin against the suns harmful rays.
However, a new study shows a new potential player in skin protection…
Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been used for years to improve heart, brain, eye, and vascular health, may also be helpful in increasing your skin’s immunity.
In fact, a new study recently published, showed that people consuming omega-3 fatty acids – as part of a regular diet – may be less susceptible to the development of skin cancer.
Why?
They show that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce or prevent photoimmunosupression, therefore it may boost overall skin’s immunity and protection against UV rays.
Here are the main points in the study:
They showed that photoimmunosuppression was less in the omega-3 fatty acids group compared to the control group.
They also showed that post-supplementation red blood cell concentration of EPA was greater in the omega-3 groups compared to the control group – in fact is was FOUR-FOLD higher. And this showed the bioavailability of EPA in the body.
What did they conclude from their study?
"Oral n-3 PUFA’s appear to abrogate photoimmunosupression in human skin, providing additional support for their chemopreventive role.”
Simply put: omega-3 fatty acids were able to reduce or prevent the immunosuppression (lack of skin immunity) therefore boosting the
immunity of the skin to fight off UV rays. Also it showed omega-3 fats to have a protective relationship in regards to skin cancer.
Omega-3 Fats and You
Omega-3 fatty acids have long been used as a way to provide both heart health and overall health improvements.
Now, according to a new study, they may also reduce your risk for skin cancer, by improving your skin’s own natural ability to protect itself from harmful UV rays.
If you’re not currently using omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil, Krill oil, olive oil, and nuts), then you may want to think about starting.
Omega-3 fatty acids may be effective in boosting and promoting overall health improvements.
