How Your Worksite Can Help You Lose FAT

When President Obama took office, there was a big push for worksite wellness and health programs.

Worksite wellness programs are integral – not only for the employer – but also for the employee.

This is the opportunity for some employees to participate in programs designed to encourage better health habits, stress reduction, weight loss, blood pressure strategies, and smoking cessation.

Now, four years later, worksite health promotion programs that focus on weight loss, well, they have gathered lots of attention.

And good attention!

But what makes these types of program so successful?

Worksite Wellness Programs

If you are the manager of a large corporation, hospital, or even some small business, then you may already understand the value of worksite wellness.

First, and foremost, worksite wellness programs, when run correctly, work wonders for employee health and wellness.

Most organization that have on-site wellness programs report an increase in productivity, reduced absenteeism rates, less worksite smokers, reduction in health care premiums, and better overall health scores for employees.

Now, besides smoking cessation programs, blood pressure screenings, cholesterol screenings, and stress reduction programs, one of the biggest programs that gather the most participants are on-site weight loss programs.

Some of these programs, the classes are well attended and some of the participants see many changes in their overall body composition, weight, and fat loss.

But when you add in a behavioral component (think wellness coaching), then the results – at least according to the latest research – seem to skyrocket.

Here are the results of a study involving a weight loss intervention program within a worksite health promotion program that added behavioral interventions:

They found that people in the intervention groups (weight loss and behavioral group) lost significantly more weight when compared to the control group – which actually gained weight.

They also found that 89 percent of people in the intervention group completed the weight loss phase of the group.

The intervention group also showed significant reductions in cardiometabolic risk factors (cholesterol, fasting glucose levels, and blood pressure) when compared to the control group.

And there were no signs of weight REGAIN in the participants in the structured weight loss program, even participants who were NOT enrolled in the intervention program LOST weight compared to the control worksites.

They concluded:

“Worksite can be effective for achieving clinically important reductions in body weight and improved cardiometabolic factors.”

Worksite Wellness is Working

Working in a worksite wellness program in the past, I have first-hand experience in knowing that they work.

However, worksite wellness programs have one thing working against them: they spend a lot of money without seeing significant reductions in tangible benefits.

Simply put: these types of programs may cost a lot of money without seeing the results hit the bottom line of the company.

The fact is: worksite wellness programs affect employee morale, reduce absenteeism, and increase productivity.

Plus, the company may see a reduction in healthcare premiums due to a happier, healthier workforce.

Now, when your program includes a comprehensive weight loss and behavior change program, the participants may have better luck losing weight, maintaining weight, and avoiding weight regain compared to other, less comprehensive programs.

And if you’re trying to lose weight AND keep it off, then these types of program may be right up your alley!
