And that these types of foods did NOT increase the risk for stroke or death from a heart attack!

The Heavy Recommendation

Previous studies have stated that a diet full of processed and refined foods—commonly referred to as the Western Diet—may pose some damaging health consequences.

Notably, these studies show that a diet rich in Western-type foods may eventually lead to a heart attack, stroke, or the development of Type 2 Diabetes.

However, the recommendations have changed slightly.

For a number of years, researchers have been touting the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet, and for good reason.

This type, which is loaded with fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, moderate alcohol consumption, legumes, whole grains, fish, and lower intake of meat, has been shown to reduce the risk of most major diseases, and that includes stroke and heart attack.

Now, researchers have shown that if you eat a Mediterranean-type diet—and eat unhealthy foods as well—your body may still be protected from heart attacks or strokes.

Surprised?  I sure am! 

But the study, which was conducted on over 15,000 people with stable coronary artery disease, showed some pretty shocking conclusions.

All the subjects were asked to fill out a food journal that tracked how many healthy foods each participant got on a daily and weekly basis.

From that information, they were then assigned to a group, one being in a more Mediterranean-style diet, with the
other groups being in more of a Western-style diet.

After 3.7 years, they reassessed their participants.  They found that there were 1,588 major adverse cardiac events —which included strokes, heart attacks,  or death.

But here’s the interesting part:

Those with a higher Mediterranean score (15 or above) had lower heart attacks, strokes, or death risk compared to the lowest group.

Basically, the higher the intake of healthy foods, the less likely they were to have a heart attack or die.

And, those who ate healthier foods may have been more protected from the damage of a Western-type diet, which could explain why Western diets posed little to no risk to participants in the study.

They concluded, “Greater consumption of healthy foods may be more important for secondary prevention of coronary artery disease than avoidance of less healthy foods typical of Western diets.”

Conclusion

For those who want to live a long, healthy life, there are certain things you need to do.

First, you need to exercise.  Second, you need to eat right!

Now, when it comes to eating right, you should consider taking points from the Mediterranean-style diet, which stresses a lot of fruits and vegetables, fish, legumes, whole grains, and lower amounts of meat and alcohol.

But that doesn’t mean you need to completely eliminate your favorite foods.  Eating this type of diet may protect your body from the harmful effects of a more Western-type diet, according to the latest research.

So, if you’re looking to improve your health—and reduce your risk for a stroke or a heart attack—then you should consider a more Mediterranean-style diet.
