Military Researchers Make Startling Discovery About Suicide Risk and Brain Health

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

In case you haven’t heard, there is a new movement going around the US and it’s a worthy one.

The challenge is to 22 pushups every day for 22 days.  It’s to help raise awareness that each day a soldier serving overseas—or one back home—commits suicide.

In fact, a recent study even states that suicide rates among active soldiers is rapidly increasing.

So, why is this occurring?  It would be safe to assume that the ravages of war play a role in what happens to a soldier’s mindset.

It could also be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which could also account for a number of suicides both in active military members and also veterans who no longer on active duty.

But there may also be another reason why soldiers are committing suicide at an alarming rate.  And it’s one that you probably would never guess in a million years…

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Suicide Risk

As previously mentioned, suicide rates among active military personnel and veterans is increasing at a very rapid pace.

However, breakthrough research shows that the omega-3 fatty acids may actually play a role in suicide prevention.

You see, your brain is comprised of high amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA.

And when levels start to dip, the DHA in your brain may also start to decline.

Studies have shown that circulating DHA may actually replenish the DHA levels in the brain, especially the gray matter of the brain.

Now, when it comes to military personal, a new study may show that the omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in suicide prevention.

The study wanted to see if low omega-3 fatty acid concentration could lead to a greater risk for suicide.

The answer, sadly, is yes, it could.

They showed that military personal low in the DHA, were 14 percent more likely to commit suicide.

That rate increased greatly—to 54 percent-–if those soldiers has seen wounded or other dead soldiers.

But here’s something worse…

Among male soldiers, the risk for suicide was 54 percent when DHA was present in low levels.

Although more work needs to be done, they concluded: “This US military population had a very low and narrow range of n-3 HUFA status. Although these data suggest that low serum DHA may be a risk factor for suicides, well designed intervention trials are needed to evaluate causality.”

Simply put, more work needs to be done, but there may be a strong correlation between low DHA levels and suicide risk.

Take Home Message

The rate of suicide among active military members continues to increase.

That’s why there is a lot of research geared at preventing suicide among our military members and the general population.

Although there are a lot of different factors and reasons why a military personal commits suicide, new research shows something surprising: The levels of omega-3 fatty acids could play a role!

A new study shows that soldiers lacking in the omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA, may be at a greater risk for committing suicide compared to those with adequate omega-3 fatty acids levels.

In order to increase your omega-3 fatty acid levels, you should focus on eating more wild-caught fatty fish, nuts, or a high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

**********

For quite some time, research into the omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, has focused solely on heart health, improvements in cholesterol levels, and heart attack or stroke prevention.

Fast forward a few years from the initial research and you now know that the omega-3 fatty acids may be useful for a number of different health conditions.

Including better brain health! Thanks to this current research, brain health has been put in the forefront and issues such as suicide and depression are now widely talked about and it no longer the secret problem that many people face.

The research is pretty stunning and shows that these powerful fats, found in wild-caught fatty fish, some veggies, and of course, Krill oil, may alleviate some depression symptoms—if you’re currently lacking in these powerful fats.

That’s why you should not go a day—no, a MINUTE—without the proper protection.  In order to satisfy the need, you would need to eat fish every day in order to get the recommend levels of DHA shown to improve brain health.

Or:

You could take a high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement, such as Omega Icon.   On the next page, you’re going to find many different reasons why you should take Omega icon.
